This queen-size bed is made from cherry wood with ambrosia maple panels in the head- and foot-boards. Ambrosia maple is maple wood that has been invaded by one of the many species of ambrosia beetles, which create bore holes in the maple wood. These beetles carry with them a fungus that the beetles farm for food, and the fungus ends up staining the wood in grey to brown colors that can result in a spectacular pattern of colored wood grain. The beetles and the fungus are gone now, and the holes bored by the beetles are filled with epoxy.
The wood for the panels was selected so that the color and grain pattern would emphasize the central panels and give balance to the overall composition.
The bed measures about 64” wide by 83” long. With a box spring, the mattress top rests about 24” off the floor.
